Align your Investments with your Values
Global finance is an opaque landscape for individual investors. All too often, our investments can end up tied to socially and environmentally harmful industries without our knowledge. How can we empower ourselves to act in this sphere, and direct our money toward worthy and positive businesses?
If you long to operate with integrity in all parts of your life but feel under-equipped or bewildered by the idea of aligning your investments with your values, the EK4T workshop is a chance to empower yourself by learning essential portfolio management skills and link your financial resources with local resilience.
In this safe, supportive and constructive workshop you will:
- Learn about the problems with global finance from an ex-insider
- Clarify your own values and build your personal investment compass
- Learn basic concepts of portfolio management and the tools to assess your liquidity and risk profile
- Learn to include non-financial considerations when evaluating investments
- Determine the prudent allocation of your portfolio to direct, impact or local investments
- Learn how to assess the risk and the alignment with your values of an investment opportunity
- Connect with a group of like-minded individuals interested in building a better world through their investments
In the first part of the workshop I will share my experience as an insider of global finance and show how the narrow focus of conventional finance leads to damaging unintended consequences. We will explore more caring alternatives to investing and the concept of Slow Money. We will then uncover the origin of investment capital and show how its continuous growth is incompatible with a finite planet. This will provide a compelling argument for adopting a more holistic approach to investing. We will then show how a Personal Investment Compass (PIC) helps us clarify what we stand for and how to enlist our investments in supporting our deepest aspirations. You will create your own PIC to guide you in your investment selection going forward. We will then explore key concepts of portfolio management, assess your risk profile, challenge assumptions of capital market expectations, and look at the reasons for including local and direct investments in personal portfolios. We will then understand the functions and challenges of securities laws, the recent changes that are opening up the field of direct local investing to the general public, and ways to move beyond conventional finance. The final section of the workshop we will look at due diligence, learn a tool for assessing investment risk, and explore an integrated whole-person approach to due diligence. You will then practice what you just learned by analyzing actual investment offerings and discuss their merits and alignment with your PIC. At the end of the workshop you will be offered an opportunity to join a community of practice and be supported in your journey towards aligning your investments with your values.
